Colin Farrell to reprise role as The Penguin for new HBO series: “I couldn’t be more excited"
A new spin-off series starring Colin Farrell’s dastardly villain has been announced following The Batman’s box office success.
Colin Farrell will be bringing his portrayal of Gotham city gangster Oswald Cobblepot (aka The Penguin) to the small screen for a new HBO Max limited series.
“The world that Matt Reeves created for The Batman is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot,” Farrell says.
“I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. It will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.”
Farrell and The Batman director Matt Reeves will both be serving as executive producers on the show.
"Colin exploded off the screen as The Penguin in The Batman, and having the chance to thoroughly explore the inner life of that character on HBO Max is an absolute thrill," Reeves said of the new show.
Former Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D writer Lauren LeFranc is set to serve as showrunner for the new series.
“I have long been a fan of the world of The Batman, and Matt’s film is such a powerful and bold entry into the canon,” LeFranc said. “I am excited and humbled to continue telling stories in the grimy world of Gotham City — and what better excuse to channel my inner villain than to tell the story of Oswald Cobblepot?”
The caped crusaders newest adventure The Batman, with Robert Pattinson in the title role, has been a smash hit at the box office. It recently passed the $300 million mark in worldwide gross. The film has had the biggest box office haul of 2022 and the second biggest opening of any pandemic era film, behind only last year's Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Several other The Batman related productions have been rumored including a film sequel and a series about the infamous Gotham City prison Arkham Asylum.
