Noel Gallagher misgenders Sam Smith in Conversation with Dutch Radio Station
According to Noel Gallagher, "The pop stars of today are fucking idiots"
Noel Gallagher misgendered Sam Smith in a recent interview when asked about the state of modern pop, also insulting them in the process.
On the Dutch radio station Kink, Gallagher went on a rant against current pop musicians, calling them “fucking idiots.” When asked about specific artists, Gallagher turned his attention toward Smith. “Sam Smith,” he said. “Just look at him”.
Sam Smith has been out as non-binary since 2019, when they discussed their gender identity in an interview with British actress Jameela Jamil. “I’m not male or female,” they said to Jamil. “I think I flow somewhere in between. It’s all on the spectrum.”
This misgendering comes at an already tough time for Smith, who has recently garnered a lot of criticism for their performances at the Grammy and BRIT awards. At both shows, Smith performed their song ‘Unholy’ alongside German singer Kim Petras. The performances played with sexual and satanic themes, with Smith wearing bondage styled clothing and devil horns.
Gallagher's comments also come soon after a video emerged of Smith being verbally assaulted in New York. While Smith walked through a park, they were yelled at by a woman who accused them of being a “demonic, twisted, sick bastard.” She told them they “belong in hell”. Beyond briefly recording her harassment, Smith did not engage with the woman.
For Gallagher, his comments come amidst the announcement of his new album Council Skies which is set to arrive in June. He was doing press for this album when he commented ruthlessly on Smith.
This morning, he announced his return to Dublin this summer alongside special guests Primal Scream and Happy Mondays. The Royal Hospital Kilmainham show takes place on August 27th.
