Jeremy Irons Launches Cork University Hospital’s Art Collection
The renowned actor was on hand to officially launched "The Collection", described as an "innovative catalogue" of art at Cork University Hospital.
Cork University Hospital’s large and growing collection of art currently comprises of 260 paintings, watercolours, stained glass, photographs, sculpture and icons.
The collection launched by Irons’, who has lived in Ireland for donkey's years, includes work by internationally recognised artists such as William Crozier, whose painting was donated by gallerist Angela Flowers, Dorothy Cross and Cecily Brennan.
Tony McNamara, Chief Executive Officer of Cork University Hospital, said: “Cork University Hospital was delighted to welcome Mr. Jeremy Irons to officially launch ‘The Collection’ catalogue.
“The Hospital believes in the importance of art for the well-being of all our patients. The underlying significance of this collection is a belief in the healing power of art and the ability to improve the experience of people attending the hospital, especially to those going through great stress and personal crisis. The CUH Art Collection has over 250 paintings from mainly Irish artists and on behalf of the CUH, I wish to sincerely thank all the artists, supporters and donors for their continued support to the collection.”
The significant collection of primarily Irish art has been generously donated to the Hospital by artists and grateful patients on an entirely voluntary basis.
Lord of the Dance star, Michael Flatley generously donated money for the healing garden at Cork University Maternity Hospital following the birth of his baby at the hospital. The ‘Per Cent For Art’ scheme, a government initiative, has also contributed a number of works.
“Cork University Hospital Arts aims to enhance the hospital environment by promoting a sense of wellbeing through the arts.,” a spokesperson for the hospital said.
“Activities include the CUH Art Collection, art exhibitions, music and choral performances, artists’ residences and theatre for children.
“Cork University Hospital Arts Committee gratefully acknowledges the generous support of Cork University Hospital Foundation, the Buckley Foundation and the National Lottery whose support has made the publication of the catalogue possible.”
