Harvey Weinstein tests positive for coronavirus in prison
The convicted rapist has been moved into isolation at the maximum security prison.
Four days into his 23-year sentence for rape and sexual assault, former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein has tested positive for coronavirus.
According to Michael Powers, president of the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Associations, Weinstein (68) is now in isolation at Wende Correctional Facility, located east of Buffalo, NY.
Speaking to Reuters news agency, Powers revealed that several members of staff at the maximum security prison have been quarantined, noting that they lack proper protective equipment.
On March 11, Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years for sexually assaulting aspiring actress Jessica Mann and film production assistant Mimi Haleyi. Before entering Wende Correctional Facility as inmate No. 20B0584, he spent time at Rikers Island jail and Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, where he was being treated for heart problems.
Weinstein's lawyer, Imran Ansari, was unaware of the disgraced Hollywood mogul's coronavirus diagnosis on Sunday night.
"Given Mr. Weinstein's state of health, we are of course concerned, if this is the case, and we are vigilantly monitoring the situation," he told Reuters.
On the day of his sentencing, Weinstein's legal team said that they would likely file an appeal in July.
