Google has revealed Ireland's most searched musical terms fin its annual "Year in Search" survey. Guess why Lesley Roy is in there!
The Jerusalema Dance was Ireland's most searched musical term on Google in 2021. Hot Press can exclusively reveal.
For those who might have forgotten what the Jerusalema fuss was all about – having been challenged by their Swiss counterparts – members of An Garda Síochána from around the country took on the viral dance. The resulting video provied very popular at the height of the last 'full' lockdown in February 2021.
Olivia Rodrigo appears twice on the top 10 most searched terms for music. The 18 year-old Californian actress has exploded into global prominence over the past 12 months, since signing a deal with the Interscope label. Given the meteoric nature of her success, it is hardly surprising that people will have wondered: who is she and where has she come from? Her own name is second in the Most Searched For Music List, and the lyrics to her hit single 'Drivers Licence' ranks tenth in the chart.
One of Ireland's favourite rock musicians – and one of the world's best known humanitarians – Bob Geldof, appears high on the list at No.4, most likely due to the fact that he recently celebrated his 70th birthday.
The Late Late Show marked the birthday with a special show back in September, featuring tributes from Geldof's band The Boomtown Rats, Midge Ure, Andrea Corr, Imelda May, and many more – including Hot Press editor Niall Stokes – as well as a message from President Michael D. Higgins.
Another artist that makes the list is Ed Sheeran, who was at the centre of many news stories related to Ireland in 2021.
In addition to releasing his fifth album and announcing eight shows across the island for next year, the 'Lego House' singer also appeared on the Late Late Toy Show recently.
Meanwhile Lesley Roy also appears in the list. She was Ireland's singer at this year's Eurovision Song Context, but sadly she failed to qualify for the final, leaving Irish Euro Song Contest addicts with nothing to cheer for – well, except all the other songs they liked!
