Billy Bragg releases song in support of Palestine and aid flotilla
The flotilla set sail on Monday after their first attempt failed due to unsafe winds
Billy Bragg has released a new song, 'Hundred Year Hunger,' in support of Palestine, coinciding with the humanitarian aid Sumud Flotilla heading to Gaza.
The track will raise money for the Amos Trust's Gaza Appeal. The song took its title from the new book of the same name by Mark E. Windle about the food deprivation in Gaza.
The Sumud Flotilla set sail with Greta Thunberg and Irish actor Liam Cunningham among the activists, from a port in Barcelona on Monday. The flotilla contains 20 vessels trying to open a humanitarian corridor and deliver proper aid.
Two previous flotilla attempts were blocked by Israel in June and July.
“Look at the current famine that Israel has created in Gaza through the lens of a century of enforced food insecurity and malnutrition imposed on the Palestinian people, firstly by British imperialism, then as a weapon of mass displacement by the state of Israel," said Bragg on Instagram.
The singer is hosting the Days Like These benefit, a concert in aid of Palestine at the London O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire, on September 20.
Earlier this year, he spoke out in support of Kneecap, when member Liam Óg Ó HAnnaidh was charged with terrorism for allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag during a concert.
