The Clinton-Lewinsky affair was one of the most shocking scandals of the 90s.
The third season of the true crime anthology series American Crime Story will focus on the affair between president Bill Clinton and White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Beanie Feldstein (Lady Bird, Booksmart) is set to play Lewinsky. The roles of Hillary and Bill Clinton have yet to be revealed.
For season 3, American Crime Story co-creator Ryan Murphy also reunites with Sarah Paulson (as Lewinsky's confidante Linda Tripp), as well as Annaleigh Ashford, who takes on the role of Paula Jones, a woman who accused Clinton of sexual harassment. Both starred in previous seasons of American Crime Story; Paulson as Marcia Clark in The People v. O. J. Simpson and Ashford as Elizabeth Cote in The Assassination of Gianni Versace.

In January of 1998, news broke that president Bill Clinton was having an affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. A news magazine was allegedly in possession of tapes confirming the relationship. The tapes were recorded by Linda Tripp, Lewinsky's co-worker and confidante. She also advised her not to dry clean the infamous semen-stained blue dress. Clinton denied the rumours at the time, stating that he "did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky".
The affair was connected to the case of Paula Jones, who sued the president for sexual harassment in 1994. Her lawyers used the Lewinsky scandal to show a pattern of behaviour by Clinton, who came clear during the trial after evidence proved that he had a sexual relationship with Lewinsky. The investigation ultimately led to charges of perjury and to the impeachment of President Clinton.
American Crime Story creator Ryan Murphy said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2018 that he would only adapt the story when Lewinsky herself is on board with the project: "I told her, 'Nobody should tell your story but you, and it's kind of gross if they do. If you want to produce it with me, I would love that; but you should be the producer and you should make all the goddamn money.'"
Murphy stood by his words, as Lewinsky is indeed amongst the producers for season 3. In an essay for Vanity Fair, she writes: "I was hesitant, and truthfully more than a little scared to sign on. But after a lengthy dinner meeting with Ryan, I came to understand even more clearly how dedicated he is to giving a voice to the marginalised in all of his brilliant work."
The third instalment of American Crime Story called Impeachment already has a release date: The series will premiere on September 27, 2020.
