Mega balladeer returns with ‘street’ flavoured new record
Though she’s shifted 20 million records world-wide, big-lunged balladeer Anastacia has never cracked her native United States – a state of affairs she sets out to remedy on this vibe-soaked comeback. Featuring cameos from rappers du jour Ne-Yo and Rodney Jerkins and songs by one-time Robbie Williams wingman Guy Chambers, Heavy Rotation is a brassy fusion of r’n b (‘I Can Feel You’) , Celine Dione tearjerker (‘In Summer’) and rawk-ing power-ballad (‘Never Gonna Love Again’). But Anastacia’s voice – once described by a critic as a ‘human air-raid siren’ – is still hard to love: when she reaches for the trembling high notes your first instinct is to duck under the table and lock your head between your knees.
