Production gets underway on George RR Martins Nightflyers at Troy Studios in Limerick.
The Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Josepha Madigan T.D launched the start of production on the new big budget TV series Nightflyers in Dublin today.
The Syfy series, based on Game Of Thrones creator George RR Martin's 1985 Novella is being produced by NBC Universal and Irish producers Macdara Kelleher and Eoin Egan.
The filming is taking place in Troy Studios in Limerick, which boasts an impressive 350,000 ft facility and is said to be employing up to 500 people during the production of this series which is believed to be recording until August 2018.
Boardwalk Empire star Gretchen Mol, who plays Gillian Darmody in the hit U.S TV show is set to play Dr. Agatha Matheson while Irish talent Eoin Macken will portray Karl D’Branin in the new Syfy series that is also expected to get a Netflix release.
At the launch, Minister Madigan congratulated those involved in landing the lucrative contract
"For this fledgling studio - which opens its doors to an international production for the first time - it is great cause for celebration. I wish to congratulate all in Limerick who had the vision to transform the old Dell factory into what is now a major asset for Ireland’s Creative industries."
The production is expected to have an estimated €70 million knock on effect into the local Limerick economy and has received funding of €850,000 from the Irish Film Board.
