New Alabama 3 album, Blues, out today

Brian Jones, Amy Winehouse, David Bowie & Lemmy are paid tribute to on the lead single

Today is a very good day because there’s a new Alabama 3 album hitting the racks/digital platforms.

Entitled Blues, but unlike the Stones not a covers record, it’s trailed by the wonderful ‘(I’ll Never Be’) Satisfied’. Brian Jones, Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison, Hank Williams, Lemmy, David Bowie and Ian Curtis are among the fallen rock greats who feature in the accompanying video, which says "Enough already!" to the Grim Reaper who's been working overtime this year.

You can catch the chaps live in the Belfast Limelight (November 11) and Dublin Academy (12) and read Mr. Tyaransen’s highly entertaining chat with Larry Love in the next issue of Hot Press.

Outlaw

What is it about this mob that fails to persuade? Their steel peddle revivalism comes on like pastiche, yet it’s subtle, tender pastiche, delivered with intelligence and reverence. There are hints of Beck, glimpses of vintage Nick Cave and tremors too of music that is older, sadder, wiser.

Alabama 3

The miniscule number of you who bought their last album, La Peste, will know that the Alabama 3 have decided to tone down the Southern preacher bit and concentrate on the tunes. It's an attempt to get away from the "novelty band" image, which has resulted in savage critical maulings in the UK, and collective head scratching on the other side of the Atlantic.
