Like their spiritual forefathers The Las, this Scouser quintet specialise in a quintessentially English eccentricity. In Magic & Medicine, they have delivered an album that unites a varied range of influences (everyone from Beefheart to the Beach Boys) into a quirkily coherent whole. Belying their tender years, the band incorporate everything from ragtime tunes to Russian folk routines; highlights include the current single ‘Pass It On’, the beguiling ‘Leizah’ and the jolly little suicide number ‘Bill McCai’.
