Jenny Keane - Mad Hatter Q&A: "If you want to change the way you live, change the way you have sex. If you want to change the way you have sex, change the way you live."
Sex educator Jenny Keane is this month's Mad Hatter
Who would be the last person you would invite to your birthday party?
Any kind of clown. I watched It when I was very young and it really traumatised me.
Who would be the first person you would invite to your birthday party?
I have an identical twin sister, so it would be a bit scandalous if I didn’t invite her.
Favourite saying?
If you want to change the way you live, change the way you have sex. If you want to change the way you have sex, change the way you live.
Favourite record?
I love listening to mantras, they calm me down.
Favourite book?
ANYTHING, and I mean anything, by Nora Ephron! Wallflower At The Orgy; I Feel Bad About My Neck (hilarious); Heartburn. Also, two good books I’ve just finished are Tart by Slutty Chef and Slags by Emma Jane Unsworth.
Favourite film?
Julie And Julia – it makes me want to run away to a French cooking school and eat butter.
Favourite author?
Sally Rooney.
Favourite actor/actress?
Nicola Coughlan.
Favourite musician?
Dermot Kennedy.
Most embarrassing moment of your life?
I dress up as a vulva to teach adults how to have better sex… There isn’t much I am embarrassed about!
Favourite food/drink/stimulant?
Croissants and coffee.
TV programme?
I am watching Battle Of Fates right now, which is a Korean-style competition between shamans, tarot card readers and psychics. It would definitely make you a believer.
Favourite TV personality?
Joanne McNally, I really hope she’s going to be on The Traitors soon.
Favourite item of clothing?
My pyjamas.
Most desirable date?
The best dates for me mirror that element of exploration and adventure. Anything outdoors in nature, whether that’s a hike, or a sea swim and a sauna, is good.
Favourite method of relaxation?
Our lives are so busy and over complicated these days, I think relaxation should be about keeping it simple. I just lie on the floor and breathe.
If you weren’t pursuing your present career, what other career might you have chosen?
I’ve been an animator; I did visual effects for feature films; I was a ski instructor and yoga teacher. At one point, I attempted to join the circus, but unfortunately severely hurt my shoulder after just three weeks. Today, I’m having so much fun as a sex educator – I like the idea of not knowing what could come next.
Biggest thrill?
Raising my family.
Biggest disappointment?
Not making it in the circus.
Your concept of heaven?
My baby laughing.
Your concept of hell?
Waiting in a queue.
What would be your dying words?
Stay in touch.
Greatest ambition?
To enjoy my life, not take myself too seriously and make people laugh.
Period of history you’d most like to have lived in and why?
Any time before the invention of the smartphone and social media.
If you were told that the world was ending tomorrow morning, how would you react/what would you do?
I would spend the rest of my time with my family cooking good food.
Your nominee for the world’s best-dressed person?
Has to be my mam.
Biggest fear?
Clowns.
Humanity’s most useless invention?
Plastic bottles.
