Kneecap to join Nuestra América Convoy to provide aid for Cuba
The Nuestra América Convoy is a response to a recent executive order from the Trump administration, cutting off fuel to the island.
Kneecap have announced that they will be joining the Nuestra América Convoy next week to provide aid to Cuba.
Kneecap’s announcement comes roughly one month before the release of their third album, Fenian.
“ANNOUNCEMENT: We’re mobilizing to Cuba,” posted the band on Instagram, along with emojis of the Cuban and Irish flags. “Next week, we will join the Nuestra América Convoy to Cuba, delivering critical aid to the Cuban people. The Trump administration is strangling the island, cutting off fuel, flights, and critical supplies for survival. It’s time to break the siege — and stand up for Cuba, as they have stood up for us.”
Kneecap finished their post with a quote from Ernesto Guevara Lynch speaking of his son, the Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara: “‘In my son’s veins flowed the blood of Irish rebels.’”
The Nuestra América Convoy is a response to a January executive order from US President Trump which imposed tariffs on any country which provides oil to Cuba. UN experts have called the executive order “a serious violation of international law and a grave threat to a democratic and equitable international order,” and warned that cutting off Cuba’s fuel supply could lead to a “humanitarian crisis”.
“The consequences of the US siege are lethal, for newborns and parents, for the elderly and the sick,” reads the Nuestra América Convoy’s website. “That is why we are preparing the Nuestra América Convoy to Cuba, mobilizing by air, land, and sea in solidarity with the Cuban people.”
Recently, Trump has discussed leveraging the approaching humanitarian crisis towards a US-led regime change in Cuba.
“It may be a friendly takeover, it may not be a friendly takeover,” Trump said on Monday. “It wouldn’t matter because they’re really, they’re down to, as I say, fumes. They have no energy. They have no money. They’re in deep trouble on a humanitarian basis.”
In addition to Kneecap, US streamer Hasan Piker has announced that he will be joining the Convoy.
Fenian is out on April 24, and the Nuestra América Convoy is due to arrive with aid in Cuba on March 21.
