Ireland’s blasphemy laws face worldwide ridicule
The news that Stephen Fry faces a Garda investigation into allegations of blasphemy, based on an has been a source of incredulity all across the world today.
Following Hozier’s attack on the blasphemy law earlier today, when he said he was "mortified’’ by the news, a diverse range of people, from theoretical physicists to iconic boxing announcers have expressed their outrage at the law, which has been described as ‘silly’ and ‘a joke.'
To highlight the ridiculousness of the investigation, comedian Allison Spittle started a twitter thread asking ‘What’s the most blasphemous thing you’ve ever done?’, which is well worth reading in full.
Amnesty Ireland Executive Director Colm O’Gorman’s contribution is a particular highlight, and received a ringing endorsement from the Rubberbandits.
@AlisonSpittle I called a bishop a bastard on Primetime TV and sued a Pope who is now a saint. Does that count?
