Gangland Killings Requires Specialised Garda Response

Deputy O’Callaghan has said that the violence of the past 10 days "further emphasises the need for Government to examine its response to date, in challenging the gun violence which has ravaged our streets for the past two and a half years".
The Deputy was commenting following the latest shooting in Dublin’s North Inner City.
Violent gun crime has claimed two lives in Ireland in the past ten days.
Two more individuals suffered serious injuries last Friday, one of which was caught in crossfire.
This brings the number of victims of gun related crimes in Dublin to four in the past fortnight.
Deputy O'Callaghan said, “Last night saw the second fatal shooting in our Capital in just ten days. As details continue to emerge this morning and Gardaí work to establish a motive, it remains unconfirmed if this shooting is directly linked to the Hutch-Kinahan conflict.
“It is apparent that gun violence has become all too prevalent among the brazen gangs who place little or no value on human life, and the Government are losing the battle against gun crime.
“This is another appalling loss of life that has left an entire community living in terror.
“It is absolutely imperative that Minister Charlie Flanagan urgently meets with the Acting Garda Commissioner, Pat Leahy to examine the current approach in detail and to ensure that Garda units tasked with policing the North Inner City have sufficient resources to take on this problem.
“I am concerned that complacency has started to set in and that news of gun deaths is being accepted as part and parcel of our everyday life. We need to realise that this violence affects us all and we cannot accept it as 'normal'."
