The Fine Gael Parliamentary Party last night recommended to its Executive Council that they "actively support" the candidacy of incumbent President Michael D Higgins in any potential Presidential Election campaign this year.
The decision was arrived at following the weekly meeting of the parliamentary party where the issue was discussed.
After the meeting, An Taoiseach and Fine Gael party leader, Leo Varadkar said, “The recommendation of the parliamentary party is that we will support President Higgins’ bid for re-election actively and campaign for him.
“President Higgins has done an excellent job, served the country very well and deserves a second term.
"He brings immense wisdom and experience to his role and I hope that this can continue with a second term for the President,” An Taoiseach said.
Fine Gael’s Executive Council will meet next week.
Fianna Fail has also ready announced that they are backing Michael D. Higgins for a second term in office.
