CAO Countdown: "If you’re still totally lost, don’t panic – you have options"
In the run-up to the CAO deadline on February 1, we’re sharing some words of wisdom from students who have been through the process – and lived to tell the tale.

When I was in Sixth Year, I was told to focus on what I was truly passionate about when filling out my CAO application. At the time, I, like many others, thought it was trivial advice – but now I can see its importance.
At this stage in the year, it’s common to feel so exhausted that you get discouraged from chasing the course of your dreams – in fear that you wouldn’t succeed. You may even consider choosing something more simple, practical, or realistic. But here’s a message from the future: never choose something out of fear.
Despite all the pressure, the uncertainty of the modern age, and the seemingly eternal tiredness, you should only chase something that echoes in your heart. Believe me – as soon as you see the name of your dream course on your CAO offers, you’ll know you’ve made the right choice.
If you’re still totally lost, don’t panic – you have options. It’s not the end of the world to take a year out. Doing a PLC course, or even taking a break from the education system completely, may open up routes you have never considered. Many people are determined to start working towards a bachelor’s degree as soon as they can – but it’s better to take a few months to explore your options, than spend four years learning something you’d rather forget, and letting your shiny degree gather dust on the shelf.
Whatever choice you make, remember that there are always multiple opportunities available to you at every stage in your academic progression – and in life in general. Be bold, and stay true to yourself. At the end of the day, you don’t owe anything to anyone but yourself.
2020 was a year like no other, and it taught us that the present is all we truly have. So, eradicate the doubt, and go for it! Your aspirations can become your reality, as long as they are genuine.
