8 Things to Know about tomorrow's March for Choice
How do I get there?
There are shuttle buses heading to Dublin’s Garden of Remembrance available from a variety of cities throughout Ireland. Click through to connect with the one in your city- Belfast, Clare, Cork, Galway, Inishowen/Donegal Derry/Londonderry, Kerry, Sligo. There is a carpool option for Wexford.
When does it start?
The march won’t get moving until around 14:00, but be sure to get there at 13:30 for speakers and other events.
What should I wear?
The weather looks promising, but this being Dublin, there are a few showers expected in the early afternoon- be sure to wear layers and maybe grab an umbrella.
Where is the march headed?
Leaving from the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin’s Parnell Square at 14:00, the march will then head down O’Connell St, then turning left once reaching the Quays and heading up toward The Custom House, crossing the Liffey in the direction of Trinity College, then taking Pearse St toward Merrion Square, ending the march at the Dáil. If you are unable to walk the full march, you can meet the crowd at The Custom House.
Who is speaking?
There is a long list of prominent speakers, including socialist activist and civil rights leader Bernadette (Devlin) McAliskey, civil rights leader Emily Waszak from Migrant and Ethnic Minorities for Reproductive Justice, Matt Kennedy, performance artist and activist, Kate McGrew from Ireland's Sex Workers Alliance, Gerry and Gaye Edwards from the organisation Termination for Medical Reasons and Eileen Flynn, of the National Traveller Women's Forum. There will also be performances from Voices For Choice, who put a pro-choice spin on classic pop songs. The event will be MC'd by Tara Flynn.
I’m a student, how do I get involved?
The Union of Students in Ireland will be meeting ahead of the march at 12:30 in the front square at Trinity College. If you’re looking to meet like-minded students, that’s the place to go.
I’m not currently in Ireland, how do I get involved?
There are global events in solidarity with the Ireland march in a vast number of cities, organised by Repeal Global. Click through to your city for more info: London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Bristol, Paris, Berlin, Vancouver, Montreal, New York,Brussels, Utrecht, Luxembourg, Cyprus, Manchester, Liverpool, Melbourne, Sydney.
What if I want to march in historical and vintage costumes to highlight how antiquated Ireland’s abortion policies still are?
You can totally do that. As the theme of this year’s march is “Time to Act”, the Time Travellers for Choice will be meeting at Hugh Lane Gallery from 12.30pm in full costume. You can dust off your flapper dress, poodle skirt, or corset (not highly recommended for marching, but still) and join in.
