Y4K - Next Level Breaks
Big bad basslines, tight beats and - unusually for a mix CD - some acapella action
The big man with the dreadlocks serves up the newest in the reliable Distinctive Breaks series.
He’s gone straight for the dancefloor jugular this time round. None of yer experimental breaks round here mate – this is all about making one dance, yah? So that means big bad basslines, tight beats and – unusually for a mix CD – some acapella action (including one from Public Enemy – nice). Big tracks include Freq’s remix of Fatboy’s ‘Retox’, the Chemical Brothers’ ‘Under The Influence’, his own roller ‘Goose’ and two from Phiul Kieran – including his newie, ‘My House Is Your House’.
On this evidence, Freq seems to be leading the charge amongst the breakbeat DJs toward a more 4/4 sound – there’s always a danger he’ll end up in no man’s land – but for the minute this rocks.
