Within And Without
Internet darling releases a subtle sounding debut.
After wowing the armchair critics of the blogosphere with his ’09 EP Life Of Leisure Washed Out (AKA Georgia-based multi-instrumentalist Ernest Greene) is ready to release his debut album. With a little help from producer Ben Allen (who’s helmed the mixing board for albums by Animal Collective and Deerhunter), he’s created a strong, psychedelic-tinged effort full of subtle melodies and interesting musical passages. While some of the tracks tend to blend into the background (‘Echoes,’ ‘Far Away’) others (such as the gorgeous ‘You and I’ which features guest vocals from Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek) are absolute world-beaters. On this evidence, Mr Greene is a songwriter of real substance.
