AMERICAN MUSIC CLUB: “Wish The World Away” (Virgin)

Grunge’s sensitive intellectual Mark Eitzel still wrestling with inner psychodramas – this is a noisy, melodic, haunting song that recalls some of Nirvana’s more tuneful, poppy stuff. But whereas Kurt Cobain was basically a bored loser, Eitzel forces you to like him; when he croons “You can wish the world away/You can wish the world away” it sounds like he’s making himself a promise even he doesn’t believe.
