We Hear Voices
French experimentalists tap their rolodex for powerful compilation
With contributions from indie alumni such as Calexico, Moriarty and 21 Love Hotel, French experimentalists The Fitzcarraldo Sessions have created a compelling record. Each of the 11 tracks features a guest artist, and the results make for powerful listening. Highlights include the rockabilly swing of ‘The Gambler’ (featuring vocals from Phoebe Kildeer) and the triumphant swagger of ‘Animosity’ (with Craig Walker assuming singing duties). The jewel in the crown has to be the moody ‘Les Mefiants’, with sublime vocals from Tindersticks warbler Stuart Staples. It could very well be the best piece of music he’s lent his name to in years.
