We Disappeared In Style
Mescalito are a strange bunch. Then again, they’re on Tummy Touch, so that probably makes sense.
Mescalito are a strange bunch. Then again, they’re on Tummy Touch, so that probably makes sense. We Disappeared In Style is the duo’s second album, and again attempts to fuse quirk rock with even quirkier beats and a dash of jazzy noodlings. But does it work? Well, yes and no. But mostly no. ‘Songai’s Indian vibes and ‘Botnik’’s warped space funk both allude to something grander but just end up sounding lifeless. ‘Voodoo Gold’ starts promisingly – low slung jazz with some nice Hammond action but then loses the plot in a very trendy way. ‘Reliance’ is just awful. Better is the excellent ‘Overproof’ – a drunken downbeat jazz number. ‘Nothing Left’ ain’t bad either. Overall? If you only buy one Tummy Touch album this year (and you should!) buy the We Are Five compilation and give this a miss.
