WATCH: Marseille Trailer, Netflix's Newest Venture
With Scandinavian drama The Bridge and Germany's Deutschland 87 opening to critical appraisal and public applause, Netflix hopes to tap into this market with political-drama Marseille.
It's a first for Netflix but considering the first trailer alone, it makes quite a strong impression.
Robert Taro (Gérard Depardieu) has been the standing Mayor of Marseille for 25 years. During this time he took the young Lucas Barrès under his wing, moulding him in vain to become his protégee. Now with the municipal elections imminent, Taro is desperate to extend his time as Mayor to oversee the construction of a casino in the historic center of the Marina. However, the election takes a nasty turn as Barrès is determined to replace Taro and will stop at nothing to get his place. As these two opposing and deadly figures come to a clash, it is their families and more importantly, their beloved city of Marseille that is suffering.
All 8 episodes of Marseille will be available from Netflix on May 5.
