Urban Soundscapes
Former Boomtown Rats guitarist pays tribute to New York, Carrickfergus
Virtuoso musician and co-founder of the Boomtown Rats, Gerry Cott’s latest release is an unashamed love letter to the acoustic guitar. Taking 13 different towns and cities (including London, New York and, for reasons that may or may not be obvious, Carrickfergus) the musician has written instrumental pieces to evoke them (bar the cover of ‘Eleanor Rigby’, which of course represents Liverpool). For most the part, Urban Soundscapes is an intriguing prospect which delivers its own quiet charms. If you’re not interested in impressionist guitar music then this isn’t the record for you, but it has some beautiful melodies and textures.
Key Track: ‘Merritt: Last Stop Before Vancouver’
