A band with the unlikely name of The Kunts made what might be described as a last-minute dash for the UK No.1 slot with a song – if that is the right word – written in what might be called 'the spirit of '77,' and titled 'Boris Johnson Is a Fucking Cunt'. In the end, No.5 was as high as they could climb – outflanked by Ladbaby, whose ‘Don’t Stop Me Eatin’’ becamse the festive chart-topper in the UK.
The Kunts have failed to grab the No.1 spot in the UK charts with their seasonal protest song, ‘Boris Johnson Is A Fucking Cunt’. But the perpetrators will deem the lark a success all the same, with the provocatively-named Kunts having battled their way to No.5 with a song tat contains just one line, and that clocks in at just over a minute.
The No.1 slot was – as predicted by Hot Press – snapped up by Ladbaby, for whom it was a third consecutive Christmas No.1 with ‘Don’t Stop Me Eatin’’. Ladbaby comprises so called YouTuber Mark Hoyle and his wife Roxanne. They first clambered to the top of the Christmas charts in 2018 with ‘We Built This City’. That was followed by ‘I Love Sausage Rolls' in 2019.
On this occasion, in addition to The Kunts, the greatest threat to their dominance came from old Christmas familiars Mariah Carey (‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’) at No.2 and Wham (‘Last Christmas’) at No.3. However, ‘Don’t Stop Me Eatin’’ sold a whopping 158,000 copies to secure the No.1 slot. In one week, it became the fastest-selling single of the year. Proceeds from the single went to food-bank charity The Trussell Trust.
LadBaby are now one of just three acts that have achieved three Christmas No.1s in the UK, lining up alongside The Beatles and The Spice Girls.
“From the bottom of our hearts, we just want to say thank you again to everybody,” Ladbaby told the Official Chart Company. "We can’t believe that, a third year on, we’ve had so much support yet again. We’re trying to raise money for an amazing cause, so thank you. Merry Christmas to everyone and don’t stop believin’ – that things are going to get better. 2021 is going to be better for everyone.”
