Tosta Mista
Canadian sextet’s second album is the toast of the town
Telling the tale of the break-up of the five-year relationship between Hooded Fang bassist April Aliermo and singer/guitarist Daniel Lee, despite its rather grim subject matter,Tosta Mistra is a surprisingly upbeat indie rock opus. Named after their favourite cheese toastie (as you do), the album clocks in at 23 minutes and wastes little time hitting us between the eyes with heartsick garage-y goodness. ‘Brahma,’ ‘Clap’ and more are sugar-tinged songs which employ elements of surf and ‘60s pop; ‘Jubb’ pushes all the right buttons; and the lot are peppered with a healthy dose of cooler-than-thou slacker charm. Not quite as inspired as, say, the Dum Dum Girls, Hooded Fang still rock in all the right places.
