Theo Bleak takes an atmospheric approach to The Waterboys' 'We Will Not Be Lovers'
The Waterboys' 1998 song 'We Will Not Be Lovers' has been reimagined by Scottish singer-songwriter Theo Bleak.
Scottish singer-songwriter Theo Bleak has premiered a music video and cover of her interpretation of 'We Will Not Be Lovers' by The Waterboys.
The classic song gained resurgence after it featured in Netflix's Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen which was released in March this year.
The singer approached the song with a slower, introspective style that captured the edge of doom existing in the lyrics that contrast the upbeat tone of the original that was released in 1988.
The gloomy, black-and-white style music video is available on YouTube, is directed by Jacob Gandy.
Theo Bleak is the musical project of Katie Lynch, an alternative artist from Dundee. Since debuting with Fragments in 2022, she has released several EPs such as Iliad (2023), Pain (2023) and Bad Luck Is Two Yellow Flowers in 2025. Her work draws inspiration from alternative rock, emo, and visual storytelling.
Reflecting on the recording, Theo Bleak said: "I adore this song, the urgency, chaos and flippancy of it. I can't help but relate its sound to the essence of a summer night on the east coast of Scotland, Mike Scott having been from Edinburgh. I wanted to recreate it whilst keeping the longing despondency of it. It makes me feel lonely but excited."
On her Instagram page announcement of the cover, she said: "I chose this song as something fun to do but recording it and making this video unearthed subconscious sadness of why I like it so much."
The Waterboys have a new album titled Atlantic Rain coming out on July 17. They will be touring later this year on their The Fisherman's Blues Revue tour with a 3Arena show in Dublin on September 5. Tickets are available here.
