The Stitch Up (Free album)
Leeds grimester Matter is hardly the most innovative thing in blue-eyed rap, but an incomparable sense of humour separates the Golden Mic winner from some of his more po-faced contemporaries. Northern Irish producer Jee4ce twiddles the knobs on standout track ‘Sub Low Swag’ under the pseudonym of Father Jack (guess which iconic clerical TV show it samples?), but there’s plenty of explicit exploits to enjoy elsewhere on the 15-tracker. Other highlights include the grinding dub beat on ‘6 Minutes Dub’, the clear-cut soul hook on ‘Light My Way’ and some cartoonish wordplay with fellow rhymers Joe Snow and Lego on ‘Chicks On The Dancefloor’. Best of all, you can download the whole thing for nada. Just don’t come crying to me if your gran walks in on the line, “Arm around some ugly slut, telling her I’m bound to fuck.”
