The Specials confirm concert album Live From The Cathedral
Live From The Cathedral will be the band's sixth official live album and 27th album overall.
The Specials have confirmed the release of their concert album Live From The Cathedral for July 10.
The British band played four nights in the ruins of Coventry Cathedral in 2019, and a "best of" audio selection has been pieced together from those performances for the upcoming release.
This will be the final release of music from The Specials following the passing of vocalist Terry Hall in 2022.
"The four nights at the Cathedral were more than just concerts," said vocalist and guitarist Lynval Golding on the release.
"They had the feel of a homecoming, a massive celebration. A celebration not just about a band but about the connection between the music and the city, a religious experience, given the venue.
"For us, they were some of the most memorable and emotional shows we have ever played, and these recordings serve as a fitting tribute to, and celebration of, our wonderful and brilliant friend Terry."
The Specials, also known as the Special AKA, are an English 2-tone and ska revival band formed in Coventry in 1977.
In 1980, their The Special AKA Live! EP lead track 'Too Much Too Young' reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart. In 1981, the recession-themed single 'Ghost Town' also hit No.1 in the UK.
On December 19 2022, the band announced on social media that Hall had died at age 63 after a brief illness, which was later revealed to be pancreatic cancer. They had planned to record a new album in the United States before Hall's health deteriorated.
In 2023, bass player Horace Panter confirmed that they had ceased making music following Hall's death.
He stated, "It would be ludicrous to tour without Terry, so yes, that's definitely the end of the Specials."
