On the occasion of the Queen of England's golden jubilee, the Sex Pistols re-release God Save the Queen, probably the most controversial record of all time. Why thank you, says her Maj, doubtlessly: exactly what we wanted

The Sex Pistols are to re-release the 1977 hit single ‘God Save The Queen’ to coincide with the English monarch’s 50th year on the throne.

The single originally went to number two in the UK charts in 1977, the Queen’s silver jubilee year, despite being banned by the BBC - although fears of embarrassing Her Majesty led to the single’s title being erased from chart listings. Conspiracy theorists believe that the chart may have been manipulated by industry insiders to prevent the record reaching the number one slot.

The new release will feature a remix by dance outfit Leftfield and will be released on May 27th, followed by a re-release of a Sex Pistols box-set on June 3rd.

Rumours are rife of a possible live reunion of the band later in the year.
