The Pirates Of Puirt
Together they make some lovely instrumental music, although it would have been nice to hear a vocal or two for variety’s sake.
Daimh are based in Scotland, but their members come from all over the place: fiddler Gabe McVarish is from California, Highland piper Angus MacKenzie hails from Cape Breton Island off the coast of Nova Scotia, guitarist Ross Martin and bodhran player James Bremner are both from the West Highlands, and banjo/mandola/whistle player Colm O’Rua is a Dub. Together they make some lovely instrumental music, although it would have been nice to hear a vocal or two for variety’s sake. The CD opens with a fine original reel by McVarish, while O’Rua contributes three compositions – ‘Down & Out In Santiago De Compostela’, a wistful little tune called ‘Maighstir Seumus MacNéill á Beinn na Faoghla’, and the intriguingly titled ‘Toad In The Toilet’.
