The P Affection
Talkin' Bout Good Vibrations
If you’re the type of music lover who likes their folk sombre, sensitive and thoughtful, I’m very sorry, but I’m afraid we can’t be wed. Unfortunately, the bad news doesn’t end there. You probably won’t be able to appreciate the twee stylings of The P Affection, a curious little record by singer-songwriter Padraig McCauley – which is a doggone shame. The Naas lad’s debut is chock-full with positivity (the first sound you’ll hear is an almighty proclamation of ‘Yes!’) and the carefree vibrations don’t let up for a minute. Big-band horns, snaking rock riffs and sweet banjo melodies are all here for the savouring, but an unshakable sense of humour is the real star of this show. ‘Rose Marie’ pokes gentle fun at an expectant mother, while ‘Daisy’ sees McCauley bellow out the word ‘whore’ for a full five seconds. ‘I’m Fucking Amazing’ explains itself. Sure, all this comedic sparkle don’t come without its moments of nice ‘n’ easy filler, but all in all, The P Affection is sharp, punchy and most importantly, a bit of a laugh. If only more artists would say ‘Yes’ instead of ‘No’...
