The Mighty Stef - Year of the Horse
Dublin rockers off to the races
Though the history books and anoraks alike state that Year Of The Horse is the Mighty Stef’s fourth album, there is a case to be made that it’s actually more of a debut. Recorded in LA by Desert Sessions/QOTSA collaborator Alain Johannes, it’s the sound of a band re-invented, re-invigorated and galvanised after years on the road. Darker, more expansive and epic, the Stefan Murphy-led outfit circa 2015 are vastly different to previous incarnations and in many ways superior.
Inspired by crazy killers, vampires and magic (or rather “Black magic!”), their first release working alongside the legendary Rough Trade label is their most fully realised work yet. Opening number ‘Everybody Needs A Grave’ sums up their state of mind perfectly. Starting slow and sorrowful, the song evolves into a powerful anthem packed with garage rock guitars and righteous vocals. Occupying a similar musical territory to the Screaming Trees and the Bunnymen, Year Of The Horse is at its best when the reins are off. String-laden lullaby ‘Capri Sun’, glam stomper ‘Vampire, Hold Me Tight’ and the disco-flecked ‘Horse Tranquillizers’ are highlights. For sure, The Mighty Stef are exploring some interesting and exciting places. The question now is: can they make the big leap?
Key Track - 'Capri Sun'
