The Law Of Large Numbers
Delgados frontwoman returns with twisted misfit alt-pop
Former Delgados front-lady Emma Pollock’s second solo record is a reassuringly barbed slab of wax that’s full of twisted lyrics (“How you gonna break my heart/ When you never even made my day,” she offers on ‘I Could Be A Saint’) and awkward, shuddering musical accompaniment. Comprising of 12 tracks, in many ways Pollock reminds us just how good her former band were before they raised the white flag (‘The Loop,’ ‘Chemistry Will Find Me’). However, The Law Of Large Numbers isn’t a nostalgia-fest, as it features some career-best material and proves that, when it comes to making alt pop for the misfits, Pollock is still the queen.
