The Blue Choir & She's A Beauty

She’s a Beauty take to the stage Upstairs at Whelan’s to support The Blue Choir. Starting as the early supporting act, they conjure an intoxicating atmosphere with a hugely energetic and funky set. Led by charismatic frontman Cathal Farrelly, they ratchet up the party atmosphere with mix of their funky songs and an exuberant energy.
Youthfulness and impromptu headbanging resulted in a gig which can best be described as highly-energetic fun. Alas, their enthusiasm occasionally gets the better of them. Some of the drumming is overcooked. And occasionally they come off as a bit awkward up there, such as on the chilled out 'Too Much Confusion'.
Opening with a bang with the brilliant 'Beautiful Unknown', the six-piece continue in this racey tempo, drawing a large crowd. These guys clearly are not going away anytime soon. Currently touring the Irish festival circuit this summer, if you get a chance do not miss out on their funky fun.
The Blue Choir are up next. Performing material from their current E.P., Ready For War, the four-piece evoke early Radiohead. You are occasionally reminded of a heavier, edgier Coronas, especially when they reach for older material. However sorties to the past merely underscore how far they have progressed their sound, as demonstrated by the stunning 'Telescope'. The crowd swoon in awe.
As they finish with 'Human Heart', frontman Barry Kirwan demonstrates his personable presence with some decent back-and-forths. This is coupled with his self-deprecating humour. With a few more releases of the calibre of 'Telescope', these guys will definitely be around for some time to come.
