Ex-Pale man delivers 17 (17!) tracks of horizontal beats moving in from the leftftield. The likes of ‘Missing A Tiny Screw’ – all classical piano, simple percussion and FX – the brassy, reggae-tinged ‘Wind Up Merchant’ and the droney, ethereal drum and bass of ‘Beak And Teddy’ are excellent, but too often this album feels too generic, too cut from the ‘chill out’ cloth. The fact that there are so many tracks works against it too, when you realise there are so many individual ideas in each track. It’s quite hard to get into. Also, approaching things from a more extreme perspective might yield more interetsing results.
