Like a Ferrari or a Bang & Olufsen hi-fi system, Detroit techno is a timeless commodity. Critics say that the sound hasn’t moved on in the past decade or so and, to some extent, they are right. However, European producers are now the main movers in this genre and, like Fabrice Lig or Aril Brikha, Scottish artist Vince Watson is constantly refining this sound. Indeed, while this new album doesn’t stray far from the sensuous strings, lush cinema scapes and fractured rhythms that this music is based on, like Brikha’s ‘Departure In Time’, it pushes the Motor City sound gently onwards and upwards.
