Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly set for Laurel & Hardy biopic
The transatlantic pairing are lined up for the title roles
Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly are set to play comedic double act Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in a big screen biopic.
The film, expected to be titled Stan & Ollie, will delve into the highs and lows of the pair’s career and relationship and their 1953 revival tour. The script is all done and dusted by Philomena’s writer Jeff Pope, and it’s to be directed by Jon S. Bird and produced by the BBC films board.
Now, reports suggest that Alan Partridge himself, Coogan, is set to pair with big-ticket Hollywood star Reilly in the flick.
“Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were my heroes,” award winning screen writer Pope says. “I am aware of the huge responsibility of bringing their characters to life, but I have not treated the boys with kid gloves or looked at them through rose-coloured specs. They are living and breathing characters, with flaws and shortcomings. The research into this story threw up so many details and facts that I had no idea about. But everything I have done has come from a place of love and more than anything else I hope this shines through.”
While details remain unconfirmed, and it's anyone's guess as to when it might see the light of day, the talk of such consulate rib-ticklers getting on board is encouraging news indeed.
