Shakira and Burna Boy perform ahead of World Cup 2026 opening match
The game marked the first World Cup fixture in Mexico since Diego Maradona's Argentina beat West Germany 3-2 in the 1986 final.
Shakira and Burna Boy were among the performers at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City for the first 2026 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony.
The ceremony opened with Latin performers swathed in silver and gold costumes, dancing and singing on the pitch.
Shakira was joined by a host of back-up dancers, sang her new track 'Dai Dai' with Burna Boy.
The Nigerian singer emerged among another crowd of dancers as he enthusiastically performed the official World Cup song.
The performance was among the celebrations to mark the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup - which kicked off with a 2-0 win for Mexico over South Africa, with the hosts now well-positioned to progress to the next round.
Other artists who took to the stage included Andrea Bocelli and EJAE, who performed a rendition of ‘DNA’.
Also performing were Maná, J Balvin, Belinda, Danny Ocean, Lila Downs, Los Ángeles Azules and Tyla, in the ceremony which began 90 minutes before kick off.
The opening ceremony was the first of three that will take place in the host nations Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Alanis Morissette, Alessia Cara, Alyanna, Jessie Reyez, Michael Buble, Nora Fatehi, Sanjoy, Vegedream and William Prince will take to the stage in the Toronto Stadium, as Canada takes on Bosnia and Herzegovina tonight at 8 pm BST.
Katy Perry, Future, Anitta, LISA, Rema and Tyla will perform at SoFi Stadium, California, ahead of the United States versus Paraguay on Saturday at 2 am BST.
