Selected Werkz
If anyone's going to represent the break beat scene in all its various hues and shapes then it's Rennie Pilgrem. After all, the TCR boss has been involved in breakbeat driven dance music since day one, releasing hardcore bombs like 'Comin' On Strong'. Despite his qualifications, Selected isn't a brand new artist album, but a collection of his finest moments to date.
However, what's interesting about the nine tracks Pilgrem has compiled here is the far-reaching range of sounds. For starters, there's the timeless 303 insanity of 'A Place Called Acid', followed by 'Black Widow', a more recent TCR outing, where Pilgrem cuts and splices conga like percussion, rave style Hoover noises over breaks cut up in a hip-hop style. If you're left doubting Pilgrem's open minded production style, then check the ragga tinged dubby 'Soundbwoy Kingpin', or 'Crispy', where deep techy chords are fused with rubbery Daft Punk style funk. It's exactly this willingness to sample and borrow from a myriad of sources that make Pilgrem and his merry gang of break beat rascals such a joy to listen to.
