The Strike Boys
Selected Funks (Wall Of Sound)
Originally released on their own Nuax label earlier in the year, Selected Funks is an unusual and welcome release from the Wall of Sound label. Hailing from Nuremberg, Germany – a town normally associated with darker deeds and sinister music – Martin Kaiser and Tommy Yamaha have come up with an inspired little nugget that soaks up influences from right back in the day. Opener ‘Strike Girls & Strike Boys’ follows a deep groove, before ‘Jet Set’ outfunks Da Punks in a cool electro kinda way, while discerning funky house fans will probably be aware of ‘The Rhyme’s bass-slappin’ beauty. On the other hand, when the Boys wanna lower the bpms, ‘Shadows’ and the glorious dubby vocals’n’melodies of ‘World of Dreams’ prove that they can chill as good as the next producer. The Strike Boys are standing at the crossroads between ’70s funk, ’80s electro and ’90s inventiveness. Old skool, nu skool? Nah, just good school. (RB)
