Running
If you recognise Jessie Ware at all, it’s probably because of ‘Right Thing To Do’, the pulsating stand-out track from SBTRKT’s self-titled debut album. Then again, if you played that record to death and Ware’s voice still doesn’t ring a bell, I wouldn’t be too concerned; the sultry Londoner has plunged herself deep into ‘80s liquid soul with her first (proper) solo single ‘Running’ and the result is closer to Sade than The xx. This deliciously schmaltzy tale of possibly requited love could easily sneak onto Diamond Life without anybody noticing, but Sade comparisons notwithstanding, there’s an awful lot to like about Jessie Ware’s swooning voice; the kind that might come out of a sedated Katy B, a nostalgic Aaliyah or a post-finishing school J Lo. You don’t have to tell us twice.
