Run Good
Dublin-based pop rockers make promising debut
There are so many great Irish albums being released that it is harder than ever for newcomers to shine through. As it happens, for the most part Dublin-based Breaking Light make a firm fist of things on their debut record Run. On what is a defiantly old school pop rock album, the four-piece specialise in huge hooks and solid song structures that are tailor-made for daytime radio. While on occasion the material is slightly let down by too much treble in the production, and their tendency to try something new in an effort to stretch their sound lets them down a little (for example the funk-ified ‘Baseline’ doesn’t work) the upside is that when they keep things in a classic M.O.R. vein (‘Run’, ‘Tell Me’) they come across as an act with real charm and character. This is definitely the direction they should take for future releases.
