RTE Radio 1 along with the BAI and Sideline Productions have announced Comedy Showhouse, Ireland's first Radio Comedy Festival taking place in Temple Bar's Project Arts Centre from Sunday January 31st to Sunday February 7th 2016.
The festival, which takes place in the Project Arts Centre, will feature 20 shows over eight days with performances recorded in front of a live audience to be broadcast on RTÉ Radio 1.
The event will feature performances from well-known Irish comedians such as Seán Hughes, Andrew Maxwell, Deirdre O'Kane, Karl Spain, Aindrias De Staic, Foil Arms & Hog, Fiona Looney and Colm O’Regan (no relation).
Radio 1 have in recent years given crucial early exposure to the likes of Al Porter, Chris Kent and Foil Arms & Hog and this would seem to continue their commitment to homegrown comedy.
The station's Music and Entertainment editor, Anne-Marie Power said: “This is a fantastic initiative for RTÉ Radio 1 as it builds on the successful comedy, Callan’s Kicks. Our listeners have huge appreciation and desire for Irish comedy and on their request, we have decided to give them more in 2016. I would like to take this opportunity to say how thrilled we are to have both Sideline and the BAI on board to back this very exciting new listener experience that marries both live comedy and broadcasting.”
The Cube located downstairs in the Project Arts Centre will also have a programme that coincide's with the main event with Q and A sessions and masterclasses in comedy writing, radio production and film and television production. The programme for these events will be available from January 11.
