RIP Phil Everly
The music world is mourning one of its greats, Phil Everly, who has died aged 74 of smoking-related lung disease.
In a statement, his brother Don, from whom he had been estranged for a period, says: "I was listening to one of my favourite songs that Phil wrote and had an extreme emotional moment just before I got the news of his passing. I took that as a special spiritual message from Phil saying goodbye. Our love was and will always be deeper than any earthly differences we might have had.
"I loved my brother very much," he adds. "I always thought I'd be the one to go first… The world might be mourning an Everly Brother, but I'm mourning my brother Phil Everly."
“Phil Everly is gone,” rues Nancy Sinatra. “Touring with Phil and Don was one of the thrills of my life. I love you Phillip; godspeed.”
“RIP Phil Everly - hear the great album that's the missing link between The Louvin Bros and Simon & Garfunkel,” says Billy Bragg referring to the Everlys’ classic, Songs Our Daddy Taught Us, which inspired the recent Billie Joe Armstrong and Norah Jones remake.
"I am saddened by the news of the passing of Phil Everly”, the Green Day man reflects. "The Everly brothers go way back as far as I can remember hearing music. Those harmonies will live on forever. We're gonna miss you Phil. Gratitude."
Adds Jones: "The Everlys had a huge influence on all kinds of musicians. The high harmonies Phil sang were fluid and so beautiful and always sound effortless in a way that just washes over the listener. He was one of our greats and it's very sad to lose him."
“One of the most influential voices in rock 'n' roll, and another legend is gone,” notes Undertone Paul McLoone while Boy George keeps it short and sweet with “Thanks for the music!”
