Rina Sawayama covers Lady Gaga's 2009 track 'Dance in the Dark' for Pride
Rina's recent album, 'SAWAYAMA', fused 2000s pop trends for an electrifying debut.
Tokyo-based pop star Rina Sawayama has covered Lady Gaga's 'Dance in the Dark' for Spotify Singles' Pride campaign.
The song originally featured on Gaga's 2009 album The Fame Monster - an extended reissue of her 2008 debut LP The Fame.
Sawayama referred to 'Dance in the Dark' as one of her favourite songs, adding that she recorded the cover at home with remote help from Clarence Clarity.
The song holds on to the same dark, nu-metal-infused electro-pop of Sawayama’s self-titled debut album, which was released in April via Dirty Hit records.
Sawayama's eponymous debut earned a whopping nine stars from Hot Press' Tanis Smither, who called "it intensely personal, a chronicle of her struggles as an immigrant, her complex family history, and growing up with depression".
Sawayama includes a steel-electric guitar growing heavier as the song progresses, marking a key difference from the Gaga version.
Gaga’s sixth album Chromatica dropped in May after an initial delay due to the coronavirus pandemic, and boasts guest appearances from Blackpink, Ariana Grande and Elton John.
