PICNIC IS HERE: Overhead, The Albatross On Electric Picnic
Ben Garrett chats to Hot Press about what to expect from their set, some of his favourite acts he's seen over the years and a few funny EP stories.
We have a late set time in the wee hours of Sunday morning. It'll be tough to keep it together at that time, getting to the stage will be a success, then we'll see what happens. We'll probably head down late on Sunday. Sometimes hanging around too long before a gig can be trying on the nerves. We finish up at 3:45am and the only other time we've played that late was at a house party that started at 4am.
The set will mostly consist of tracks off the new album, and we'll throw in a cover we've started playing of Hans Zimmer with a voice over of Charlie Chaplin over it.
We've played the Picnic twice and each time we've played it hasn't been the full band line-up because people have been abroad, or Joe broke his collarbone at a metal show in Fibbers last time - Dave played bass and someone else played keyboards - hopefully this year we'll all make it. If we were down there for the entire weekend before the show, something would inevitably go wrong.
One of my favourite gigs from the Picnic over the years was Sigur Ros, that show was incredible and Explosions In The Sky, they were pretty amazing too.
We're playing the Body & Soul Stage and there are some great acts playing there including TooFools, Plutonic Dust, The Altered Hours, Talos, i'd love to see him, and Barq, they're another band that are on the up as well. The main stage on B&S is really awesome because it is a natural amphitheatre with loads of people walking by.
I always make plans to see loads of bands, but then i usually end up missing most of them. I am going to try and catch New Order, Fangclub and Le Galaxie. I remember seeing Kodaline for the first time at EP when they were just starting out, that was pretty cool. A lasting memory of the Picnic is getting tea from that little stand at B&S, that's great craic. Everyone just huddles around there at 4 in the morning when they are freezing.
Catch Overhead, The Albatross on the Body&Soul: MainStage, Sunday 4th September, 02:45 - 03:45.
