Phox 'Slow Motion' - Track Review
From Baraboo, Wisconsin, hotly-tipped sextet Phox are a musically adventurous bunch. Fusing Caribbean rhythms with a rootsy Americana sound, the band have impressed with their genre-straddling. And yet ‘Slow Motion’ sometimes feels a little bloated and over-blown to these ears. Adopting a kitchen-sink mentality when it comes to instrumentation (clarinets, banjos, pianos and more all appear), the single is a mid-paced, pleasant listen but a little forgettable too. Singer Monica Martin does have a great voice, though; her smoky tones lift proceedings considerably.
