The former REM guitarist releases an album this Friday.
The legendary Athens, Georgia band he played six string for for over three decades may have folded last year but Peter Buck's urge to create luckily hasn't abated. Still untitled, the album sees the light of day at the end of the working week – sadly for most fans, however, it will be limited to a run of 2000 vinyl records. The creator hasn't dismissed the idea of a wider release in the future.
The work was written while Buck was laid up with an injury and features Patti Smith's wingman Lenny Kaye, as well as former bandmate Mike Mills on backing vocals.
"When REM called it a day," says Buck, "I'd spent the last three months on my back with a semi-crippling injury unable to play guitar," Buck recalled. "With my band gone and unable to use the fingers on my right hand, I started writing lyrics just to have something creative to do."
